I have just spent the most amazing week on the Greek island, Mykonos with a close girlfriend of mine. This was my first-time travelling to Mykonos, and definitely not the last.
The island is amazing in many ways but there is also a lot to be improved. One thing is the fact that there are only 32 taxis on the whole island. Moreover, the roads are dangerous as they are damaged, narrowed, and with hills and curves. And 90% of the cars, scooters and ATV’s I drove by, drove so dangerous. The guy from the car rental company that I used told me that there happens a lot of accidents on the island (surprise surprise) and last weekend 17 accidents occurred. He did not really encourage me to rent and drive a car, but I had to, as I wanted my girlfriend and me to be independent of taxis or drivers. I really wanted to discover the island on my own. And because the guy from the rental company said that a lot of people ruin the pretty cars, we wanted a car that did not stand out or were too new, which ended up in us renting a shitty Jeep with an open roof. To make this story short, nothing happened. We drove safe in Mykonos, and even though we were close to smashing scooters, nothing happened.
Besides the car and road situation, Mykonos has a lot to offer. The sea is turquoise blue and the beaches are stunning. The food is divine and the party scene is top!
If you are going to Mykonos for the first time, I know you can make use of my tips, and if you have already been to the island, you might find a place or two which you have not been to and might explore know.
Below are all my favourite spots on the island:
Lunch Restaurants:
The mentality on the island is that you eat lunch late, around 3 PM.
Hippy fish - is an amazing spot. Hippy fish is a beach and a restaurant on top of the beach so you overlook the beach. The restaurant is family-owned and you feel the cosy atmosphere when you are there. They catch their own fish in the morning and serve them for lunch.
Scorpios - is a must visit beach restaurant and open for both lunch and dinner. On Tuesday’s, Thursday’s, and Sunday’s they have a lineup with DJ’s and the place turns into a massive party. Sunday is the day to go if you want the big party!
Remezzo - if you prefer a more chill lunch in Mykonos town, Remezzo is the place to go to. The restaurant is in the harbour so you overlook beautiful boats and the cute old town of Mykonos.
Nammos - is a pretty beach restaurant serving delicious Greek food. On Saturday this place turns into a massive party from 4 PM, so go for late lunch if you want a party or go one of the other days if you just want to have a civilised lunch. They also have a lot of sun beds which you do not need to book, just show up and you will get some. The earlier you go the better chance you have of getting the sun beds you want.
Santa Marina & Buddha Bar: Santa Marina is a luxury hotel and is stunning. The hotel is secluded and has a Buddha Bar restaurant on the beach. If you want a chilled lunch with amazing Asian food, this is the place to go. The place is expensive but delicious. You can also book sun beds so you can tan before or after lunch. The Buddha Bar beach is beautiful and flat.
Alemagou -is a cool and edgy beach restaurant. The place has a very secluded location. I thought I was lost when driving there. But after getting there, I understood the whole charm of the place.
The beach is wavier but the water is still turquoise and see-through. The restaurant serves delicious food, probably the best lunch I had.
Alemagou has a party starting at 5 PM on Wednesdays and Fridays, which is worth going to.
Dinner:
Sea Satin - This place is AMAZING! My best night. The restaurant is located in “Venice Canals” in Mykonos town and is exactly on the edge of the ocean. The place is not fancy itself but there is an honest and more local vibe than a lot of the other places. Here is it important that you go for a very late dinner. We went at 11 PM and that was perfect. During the night the DJs play different music, mainly Greek music and suddenly you will hear plates and glasses getting smashed on the floor, which apparently is a part of the concept of this restaurant. Then after some hours, people will start dancing on the tables… and more plates and glasses get smashed on the floor. The fun and honest part of this restaurant is the fact that you have all ages at the restaurant, younger girls and older women, couples, families, etc. And then after 1 PM everybody dances and parties together.
If you want to experience this, go on a Friday and Saturday- I cannot guarantee that the restaurant will turn into a party from Sunday - Thursday.
Interni - a beautiful restaurant located in Mykonos Town on a very narrow street, which just does the restaurant more charming. The restaurant is in a stunning garden with a bar in the middle. The food is delicious and the ambience is sophisticated.
Ling Ling Hakkasan - Is a fancy Chinese restaurant located next to Interni. The place is beautiful and the food is great, but the place is quite posh and expensive.
Scorpios - Most people for lunch only, but I went one night for dinner and it was amazing too.
Night Party:
All the clubs and bars are in Mykonos town, so you can easily walk from one place to another.
Void - is the new cool club on the block. Void has the best line up if you are into electronic music like me. DJ’s like Seth Troxler, Guy Gerber are playing there.
Bonbonniere - If you are more to RnB and Hip Hip, Bonbonniere is the place to go.
Queen - Fun party bar
Astra - The cool bar
What to see:
One must see is to explore Mykonos town, which is so charming and pretty.
The city offers a lot of cute cafés, which I, unfortunately, did not have time to try out.
The shopping is surprisingly good in Mykonos. They have everything from Greek sandals, souvenir shops, to Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and a lot of multi-brand stores which amazing selections.
…. Everything depends on your mood about where to go…
